The launch communications group supports launch site operations with operational voice, mission-critical video, vehicle and payload interface RF systems, site communications infrastructure, and real-time operations. Engineers and specialists on the communications team provide system design and development, critical performance evaluation, customer interface systems, and upgrades that enable safe and successful launches and spacecraft support.


  • Design, construct, and maintain:
  • Operational voice (wired and wireless) intercom systems
  • Site-wide Motorola two-way radio systems
  • Video cameras, video distribution systems, and video control applications
  • High speed imaging systems
  • Timing systems (GPS timing receivers, IRIG-B and CS-5 count distribution)
  • Public address systems
  • Satellite RF re-radiation systems to customer ground equipment
  • Satellite ground stations
  • Area warning systems (AWS)
  • Site Wi-Fi, small cells, and cellular repeaters

  • Perform trade studies to define communication system requirements and optimizations
  • Assist with proposals and specification development related to launch site facility-to-range and launch vehicle-to-ground communication systems
  • Provide support in the assessment, specification development, and testing of radio frequency systems
  • Work in the field, performing hands-on designing and troubleshooting


  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or aerospace engineering
  • 2+ years of project or industry experience with communications systems, controls, and/or radio frequency
  • 1+ years of project or industry experience designing, implementing, and testing system-level architectures


  • Ability to perform field work and utilize tools and test equipment
  • QSC knowledge
  • PLC programming and automation
  • Experience testing and troubleshooting RF systems using spectrum analyzers
  • Experience using electronics test equipment including oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, power meters, BERTs, multimeters, etc.
  • Experience performing RF system design and link analysis for launch vehicle and satellite systems
  • Experience in the installation and operation of RF communication systems
  • Experience with IP and HD-SDI video cameras and infrastructure
  • Experience with wired and wireless voice intercom communication systems
  • Basic programming knowledge of C++, Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, and Linux OS
  • Basic understanding of development frameworks (Qt Creator, Django)
  • Experience with serial data communications systems including acquisition, storage, processing, transport and display including TCP/IP, EIA 530, and PCM/FM
  • Experience with configuration and operation of TCP/IP based communication equipment
  • Basic familiarity with electronics labs and environments
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication and briefing skills with an ability to interface with key stakeholders
  • Familiarity with NASA telemetry standards, TDRS SNUG, Federal Communications Commission (FCC regulations and Range Commanders Council (RCC) Inter Range Instrumentation Group (IRIG)) standards
  • Able to work well in a collaborative team environment including daily interactions with all levels of employees
  • Ability to manage projects from early design stage to implementation and testing
  • Motivated and attentive to detail


  • Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
  • Must be willing to travel (approximately 10%) to other launch sites as necessary
  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends when necessary to support launch and critical project timelines; schedule flexibility required
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted
  • Lifting, standing, climbing, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, stretching, and carrying are generally required to perform the functions of this position
