The Payload Launch Sites Support Services (PLSSS) Program provides all launch processing support functions for Office of Space Launch (OSL). One of the program's two primary operating locations is Vandenberg AFB, CA. Key elements of the PLSSS program scope include satellite launch processing, transport operations, propellant loading operations, and satellite processing facilities O&M, clean room operations, and safety and environmental services. OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY This occupation encompasses the mechanical duties of development, modification, final check out, maintenance, adjustment and operation of facility and vehicle systems, including fairings, AGE (Aerospace Ground Equipment), mechanical, electro-mechanical systems, subsystems and components. Includes participation in countdown test, structural, hydraulic, propellant, pyrotechnic, pneumatic, cryogenic, pressured gasses, environmental and contamination control systems and abort procedures, and post-flight or missile accident recovery programs. WORK PERFORMED Determine from instructions and other data the method and sequence of operations to be performed. Assist Engineering and/or Technicians in the development of structural, hydraulic, propellant, pneumatic and environmental control systems including fabricating, assembly and troubleshooting of vehicle and AGE mechanical, electro-mechanical, and fluid systems. Assist Engineering and/or Technicians in the operation of such systems during systems test and launches; modify, maintain, checkout, and adjust such systems as required, working from any type of authorized engineering information. Perform post launch repair and assist in flushing operations on pad facilities. Work with, or assist by following engineering or technician instruction, mechanics in other fields of specialization as required by performing work up to the level of difficulty described herein. Perform minor maintenance and upkeep for the prevention of corrosion on surfaces while performing authorized modification, repair or installation of replacement parts. TYPICAL MATERIALS, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Materials worked with, including, but not limited to: missile propellants and support fluid/gasses, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, Plexiglas and plastics, lubricants, epoxy, adhesives, insulating varnishes, compressed air and cleaning fluids. Tools used: Standard shop hand tools, various tubing solder and crimping tools; mechanics' and metal working hand tools, drill presses, hand brakes and shears, disk grinders, power saws, punching and bending machines, sanders, environmental (O2/CO2/explosive air testers.
Basic Qualifications:
Working knowledge of methods and requirements including safety and environmental regulations necessary to prepare vehicle and AGE systems and equipment for test or launch purposes Possess a working knowledge of working characteristics of materials used in vehicle manufacture, propulsion and structural materials, mechanical parts and assemblies Set-up and operate various types of metal forming, bending, blanking, and cutting machines and equipment Ability to use shop mathematics, including algebra and trigonometry. Normally requires two years of technical training beyond high school, plus three years of experience in an aerospace mechanical field Ability to use tools and equipment to perform work described herein. Recertification in the use of these tools and equipment is required to retain this job classification Must have ability to work at various heights on gantries, towers, and poles; to work in confined areas Operate basic shop equipment used for forming, fabricating and machining metal and operate optical and other precision measuring devices Must have ability to work at various heights on gantries, towers and poles, and be able to work in confined areas Must be able to lift 25 lbs Ability to use tools and equipment necessary to perform work described herein Must be willing to travel Must be a United States citizen Must be able to obtain a TS/SCI security clearance Must be able to maintain certifications in propellant protective equipment, i.e,(SCAPE)
